When you seem to be striking out when searching for a number as a whole, you may want to break it up to see what it can tell you. Much like a zip code, some of the numbers within a phone number are there to tell you more than you may realize. The area code, for example, can be a powerful tool to let you know a geographical region of a number. The next three numbers can give you even more information.

Obviously a number within your own area code is going to be something you won’t need to search. However, any other area code is going to be foreign to you, and that means you have a clue sitting in front of you. You can find some great information about a number simply buy using free area code lookups to see where that area code comes from.

What you should remember about area codes before you start searching is that there are now more of them than there used to be. This happened when cell phones became more popular, and the demand for phone numbers went up. There simply were not enough to meet the demand. Many larger cities had to add a new code, or even a few of them, so that there were enough numbers to go around. You may not be familiar with some of the newer ones, so one that looks strange may be closer than you think.

Putting the area code into a lookup will tell you where the call comes from. Some of these lookups also come with a map, which means you can see the service area for that code. There are times when a code covers an entire state. That is more common with mid-western states. Otherwise, the states and even the cities are broken up into areas. Pittsburgh, for example, used to be 412 for the entire city. Now, however, they also have 724, which reaches the areas around the city. PA also has 717, 570, 814, 215, and 610.

Once you have found out the general geographical region for your number, you can then search for the three digit exchange that comes with it. These exchanges are used over and over again across the country, but will only happen once within an area code. That means you can find the city or town of residence very easily. This isn’t all that you need to identify a caller, but it can help you know where a call is coming from, and that might just tell you something about the caller that you need to know.
